Match Four

Match Four Result - South Africa 29 -17 Australia

Despite going into an early lead with a superb try scored by full back, Asley Walker, Australia, like the All Blacks before them, failed to deal with the Springboks match intensity and ferocious style of play. The \'Boks\' ran out emphatic winners 29-17 and must be extremely pleased that they go to the Antipodes with a 100% record.

Undeterred by Walkers try, the South African\'s just merely smashed into Australia, making sure play was in the Wallabies half of the field. Their pressure paid off handsomely with Australia being forced into mistake after mistake giving the home team a succession of penalties that Morne Steyn took full advantage of. The \'Boks\' also scored a try in the first half, with the unlikely pairing of forwards, John Smit and Victor Matfield combining for a delicious try that any three-quarter line in the world would have been proud of. Try as they might, Australia simply could not break the power play which led to some frustration during which time they had two players yellow carded, including important outside half, Matt Giteau.

The second half was more of the same with South Africa punishing the Aussies both in open play and in the scrums and particularly the lineouts, where they seemed to win everything. Australia did manage a late try from Giteau, which gave them some sort of hope but the \'Boks; soon stuffed their optimism out with yet another Steyn penalty.
